Ti-Ca-P biocomposites for load bearing orthopaedic implants

Ti-Ca-P biocomposites for load bearing orthopaedic implants were formed from precursors of titanium, calcium and phosphorus. Bone like calcium-phosphatic phases like hydroxyapatite and tricalcium phosphate phases were formed in situ in Ti-based matrix through powder metallurgy (PM) processing. The composites when evaluated for their mechanical, wear and corrosion properties are found to be suitable for implant materials. These composites are found to be biomimetic in nature and in vitro cell cytotoxicity results proved them to be non-cytotoxic.
